My Proudest Moment

Secret Visions front kindle cover

Below is a review of my  YA paranormal novel, Secret Visions. The reviewer understood perfectly what I was trying to accomplish with this story.

“This is an excellent novel that captured my attention from the beginning, pulled me in, and never once let go. Pat O’Connor is a talented writer who knows how to grab and keep our attention! Each scene was riveting, imaginative, and flowed smoothly from one to the next… never a “dull part” where you get bored or want to skip ahead… in fact almost the opposite with the various interweaving plotlines and going from one character and event to the next.   The descriptions were very strong, and I mean with the author’s word choice… unique and powerful…. Had a very deep, spiritual, almost philosophical quality, especially for a YA book, which I found to be refreshing. I felt like I was genuinely inside the characters’ heads experiencing the world through their eyes, for better or worse. I would love to read more from this author in the future as the series continues (this is just book 1). She has a natural gift for creating a well-thought out story and developing deeply memorable characters with a great positive message. Recommend for ages 13 and up (even adults!) Photos to Spark the Imagination

mystical contemplation

I came across a website that compiles fascinating photographs consisting primarily of landscape shots. Many of these appear alien (although they aren’t), and I think it could be a great source of inspiration for fantasy and science fiction writers. http://35zen.com/ and follow on twitter at @ImageneLive to see new photos as they are added.

Beta Readers Needed

If you’re interested in signing up as a beta reader for my next novel in the Annie McDoogan series, please let me know at poconnor.author@gmail.com. Power Surge should be ready for constructive criticism at the end of June. You don’t have to have read Secret Visions, the first book in the series. I can send a free .mobi Power Surge file to interested parties.

The ongoing story line has three Fort Lauderdale, FL teenage protagonists who have survived a near-death experience that left them feeling connected with an infinite number of beings. Annie McDoogan, the series title character, is a science whiz who wants to meld quantum physics principles with extrasensory perception abilities, thereby enabling  normal people to develop skills to help mankind.

The first book, Secret Visions, uses telepathy to calm angry brains and bring about peace. I was inspired to write this after the ISIS beheadings in the summer of 2014, and it is full of physical conflict. Power Surge, on the other hand, has been more difficult to write because I don’t have the same type of passion that the summer’s violence evoked. Consequently, Power Surge is more of a psychological drama in which the protagonists learn Reiki to help patients who have succumbed to an extremely drug resistant form of tuberculosis.

In the Secret Visions novel, the peace effort went viral with young people very quickly and caused resentment and fear in some quarters. The main antagonist in Power Surge is a yogi in India who wields a significant amount of influence in his hometown by threatening to curse individuals who don’t comply with his demands. He fears that Annie’s explanations for ESP will diminish his supernormal reputation. When Annie and her crew turn to healing the sick, it’s the last straw for the powerful man, and he takes action to stop her.

As background research for this book, I completed the Transcendental Meditation course and a Reiki Level 1 class. If you are interested in helping me, please let me know.
